New York Knicks 101, Detroit Pistons 79: Road woes continue for travel-weary …
KNICKS 101, PISTONS 79: Detroit loses fifth straight
game overall, fourth in a row on the road.
Records: Pistons 16-32, Knicks 24-25.
Big shot: Ben Gordon had the Pistons only solid game on the
offensive end, scoring 20 points after shooting 7-for-13 from the field. As a
team, the Pistons shot 36.8 percent and only had one other player (Greg Monroe)
in double figures.
Inside job: The Knicks dominated the Pistons around the
basket, outscoring them 52-30 in the paint while outrebounding them 54-30.
Tyson Chandler had a game-high 17 rebounds and 14 came in the first half, when
the Pistons had 14 as a team.
Season sweep: The victory gave the Knicks a sweep of a
season series with Detroit for the first time since 1995-96, when New York won
all four meetings between the teams. This season, the Knicks won the three
games against the Pistons by an average of 24 points.
Road woes: The loss was the fourth straight on the road for
the Pistons, who are in the midst of a stretch that has them playing nine of 10
and 13 of 17 away from The Palace. Theyve lost eight of their last nine on the
road.
Injury update: Rodney Stuckey missed his third straight game
with a sore left big toe while Will Bynum also sat out with a virus. Stuckey
hopes to play Monday night, when the Pistons travel to Washington to play the
Wizards.
Frank-ly speaking: They dominated the paint. They were
plus-(22) points in the paint, plus-24 on the boards, 18 offensive rebounds. Its
frustrating. You have to give them credit. They definitely were the aggressors
in the paint. We have to do a better job of protecting our paint. They get it,
put their heads down and run through you. We have to do better in that area.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank.
Next up: 7 pm Monday at Washington Wizards (FSD Plus)

Young London Syrians travel to country to support protest
As the violence and unrest in Syria continues a number of young Syrians raised in London are travelling to the country – and risking their lives – to support the protest movement aiming to topple the regime of President Assad.
Mohammad is in his early twenties and lives in west London. He is closely involved with activists both here in the capital and in the Middle East. But he is frustrated at being unable to do more.
For me living in London, not knowing Syria and never having been there I never thought of going back to my country, but just seeing all the bloodshed whilst sitting here in London not doing anything, I feel like Im useless, he said.
I have to sacrifice whatever I can to help this revolution succeed.
Mohammad, who does not want to be named, plans to travel to Syria in the coming weeks.
Raising awareness
More than 8,000 people have been killed there in the past year according to the United Nations. Mohammad knows that going to support activists there could mean he will not return to the UK.
If you see all the blood that is shed in Syria you dont even think about your own life, he said.
Travel column: Titanic Anniversary offers new and exciting travel experiences
I had a sister that was born on April 15, and she hated everything about it. Income taxes are due. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. The Titanic sank. There was, she stated matter-of-factly, absolutely nothing good about this day.
Granted, April 15th does tend to give Friday the 13th a run for its money. But from a travel perspective, the anniversaries of significant events can offer myriad new and special experiences in countries near and far. This year, of course, marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic tragedy and there are endless opportunities to observe and remember this event around the world.
The opportunity to visit the site is of course paramount to many Titanic aficionados. The Azamara Journey is one of two ships offering a Titanic Memorial sailing this year. This full-ship charter sails roundtrip from New York, calling initially on Halifax, Nova Scotia, which has strong ties to the Titanic disaster and serves as the final resting place for many of its unclaimed victims.
From Halifax, the ship sets sail to the site. While in transit, guests will hear from Titanic experts who will share what life was like aboard the ship 100 years ago. On arrival at the site, a memorial service will be held above the wreckage at 2:20 am on April 15. Fred. Olsen Cruise Line, a UK-based company, is also offering a full-ship charter on its MS Balmoral. Sailing from Southampton on April 8, passengers will be served the same food served on the original voyage and will also experience entertainment appropriate to the era. It will follow Titanics original itinerary, calling on Cobh, County Cork Ireland, which was her last port of call before heading out to the Atlantic. Historians and experts will share knowledge of the disaster and life aboard the grand ship while in transit, and the ship will also hold a memorial service in the wee hours of the morning of April 15. While replicating the Titanics original itinerary, the main difference is that this voyage will continue on to arrive in New York Harbor, where the Titanic should have reached 100 years ago.
For those that prefer a land-based observance, Ireland has become a destination of choice this year due in large part to its Titanic ties. As mentioned above, Cork Harbour, in Cobh, County Cork, was Titanics final port of call, and the town has capitalized on this infamous distinction with a number of attractions dedicated to the memory of the fateful voyage. The Titanic Trail, for example, is a guided tour that explores this historic town, where the buildings, streets and piers have essentially remained unchanged since the Titanics sinking 100 years ago. Also opened this February in Cobh is the Titanic Experience, located in the original offices of the White Star Line, which served as the departure point for the last passengers to board the ship on its maiden voyage.
The Experience tells the story through the eyes of these mostly third-class Irish passengers. Visitors to the Experience are transported back in time as they receive their tickets containing authentic passenger details, and pass through the ticket office to the tenders, which carried the last 123 passengers to the ship. Full of excitement, anticipation and dreams of a better life, nearly eighty percent of them would perish just three days later.
Also scheduled to open at the end of this month in Northern Ireland is the Titanic Belfast Museum and Visitors Center, which sits adjacent to the exact site where the ship was constructed. The museum, which replicates the original hull of the ocean liner, will have four wings housing interactive galleries showcasing the citys shipbuilding history as well as the Titanic story from conception to tragic end. The exhibit also brings visitors into the present day, examining the discovery of the wreck and its continuing exploration.
If traveling all the way across the pond is not in the cards for this year, some of the most significant artifacts related to the Titanic can be found in relatively nearby Nova Scotia, at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Generally recognized as the worlds finest collection of wooden artifacts from the ship, the displays include a nearly perfectly preserved deck chair, unique photos, documents, newspapers and the most complete record of bodies recovered from the disaster site.
Even closer to home, the Titanic Museums in Branson and Pigeon Forge are each presenting A Night to Remember: An Original Musical Tribute to Titanic on Saturday, April 14. Since July, visitors to these museums have been dropping rose petals into containers provided in the memorial rooms. These petals will be scattered at sea by the US Coastguard International Ice Patrol during a ceremony conducted above the Titanic on the morning of April 15.
But if observing this most important anniversary from afar is simply not enough, one company is offering the ultimate in Titanic Memorial Experiences. Simply fly your Lear Jet to Nova Scotia, where you can jump on one of two rare and exclusive dive expeditions to the Titanic site itself.
Beginning with a pre-expedition dinner the night before in St. John, the 20 lucky participants will board the expedition vessel for the 350 nautical mile trip to the Titanic site. But the adventure doesnt stop thereeach expedition offers the opportunity to journey to a depth of 12,500 feet to explore the actual wreck site in a private submersible vehicle.
The pricejust $66,000. Per person. But it does include meals. And maybe even the total eclipse of the sun.
Three years from now will mark the 150th anniversary of the assassination of President Lincoln, and we can be sure that many significant observations will take place across the country, offering travel experiences aplenty. And October of 2013 will mark 100 years since the personal income tax was permanently introduced, and undoubtedly accountants all over the country will be marking the occasion with great revelry. But 2012she belongs to Titanic.
Travel insurance not a luxury expense
Another question that I’m frequently asked deals with travel insurance. To many folks it is just another extra expense and they frequently brush it off with a comment like “I never get sick!”
My textbook answer is “How much will you lose if you cancel your trip the day of departure? What will it cost you if you have to fly back to the states from your European tour due to a medical emergency?”
There are hundreds of circumstances that could cause you to cancel your trip, return home early or force you to seek emergency medical treatment while traveling.
To demonstrate the importance of purchasing travel insurance, and emergency travel services, here are 10 common examples of what could go wrong.
It’s 10 pm and you and your immediate family arrive at the airport for a connecting flight, only to find that your flight has been cancelled. Who can assist you with finding new flights to get everyone home?
Your bag was lost with your insulin inside. You need help to locate your bag as soon as possible and have your emergency prescription filled. Who do you call?
Your first visit to Europe, and your passport and wallet are stolen. Where do you turn for emergency cash, and how will you get your passport replaced?
You’re involved in an accident and adequate medical treatment is not available. Who will help arrange and pay for a medical evacuation?
If your sister-in-law becomes seriously ill and you must cancel your trip, what happens to your non-refundable deposits or pre-payments?
You arrive in Jamaica and your luggage doesn’t. If it’s lost, who will help you find it? If it’s delayed, who will pay for your necessities? If it’s stolen, who will pay to replace it?
Your cruise line, airline or tour operator goes bankrupt. Who will pay for your non-refundable expenses? Who will help get you to your destination?
You’re walking down a street in Istanbul and a car backs into you, twisting your ankle. Who can help you find an English-speaking physician?
Three weeks before your scheduled arrival, a terrorist incident occurs in the city to which you are planning to visit. Who will pay if you want to cancel your trip?
You are at a beach resort in North Carolina, and you are forced to evacuate due to an approaching hurricane. Who will help you evacuate and who will reimburse your lost vacation investment?
Discussing some of these travel occurrences generally gets people’s attention. The conversation regarding insurance coverage becomes important and more focused. Many people are confused with how much coverage to purchase and a knowledgeable travel agent will be able to come up with a valid quote.
Another huge issue is the pre-existing conditions clause! This is an insurer’s get out of paying your claim tactic but if you follow a few basic and simple rules you can get the clause waived.
Timing counts here! You have to purchase travel insurance within the insurer’s deadline window for these three important types of coverage: (1) waiver of pre-existing conditions, (2) cancel-for-any-reason protection, and (3) travel supplier bankruptcy/default coverage. I always suggest that the best time to purchase this coverage is at the time when you make the trip deposit.
If you’re still not ready to buy insurance, most insurers typically allot between seven to 21 days after the initial trip deposit for you to still buy insurance with these protections. It varies by insurer.
Agents can tackle general policy features and pricing. But I recommend that you the traveler contact the insurer’s customer service department for any specific questions before you purchase the insurance coverage. You need to understand policy definitions and what each specific type of coverage entails.
Armed with this data you can then make an informed buying decision. If you opt out of buying insurance there’s a good chance that you’ll have to sign a release form stating that you were offered the option to purchase travel insurance and declined.
Here’s another benefit of working with a live agent. They can advise on the ins and outs of this very complex product. Yes most if not all on-line booking sources offer travel insurance but can they discuss your trip and specific needs? Doubtful!
Again I would like to repeat my automatic response to the insurance question “How much of your money can you really afford to lose? An investment in travel protection can give you the peace of mind that you really need to enjoy your vacation!”
There’s still time to join Ironton in Bloom on their spring getaway to the Biltmore gardens and estate. The travel dates for this fairly inclusive motor coach journey are Saturday April 28th and Sunday April 29th. For additional details contact me at 740.550.9540 or thetravelprofessor@gmail.com. With rising gas prices it makes sense to travel with a group. That being said I hope to see you on the bus!

Travel / Southeast Asia: Waking from nightmares to a brighter tomorrow
On a map, somewhere between hell and heaven, youll find Southeast Asia.
We had glimpses of both extremes on a recent two-week trip to Cambodia and Vietnam. More heaven than hell, luckily. This exotic region once known as French Indochina abounds in cinematic landscapes and entrancing faces that make even a casual point-and-shooter feel like a National Geographic photographer. These are exotic lands of ornate Buddhist temples minded by nuns and monks glowing with a calm knowledge seemingly just beyond most of our reach. But outside the gates may be beggars with beseeching eyes, and just down the road may be bloody scars in the earth from unspeakable atrocities committed in meaningless wars dating back decades, or centuries.
We made our first visit to this part of the world in February as members of a 14-person Maui-based team launching the inaugural Angkor Wat International Film Festival in the Cambodian city of Siem Reap. Hosted by the five-star Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Resort, plans have just been announced for the second annual festival next January. Its not too early to start making plans to attend
While the film festival and its namesake world heritage site of Angkor Wat were the centerpiece of our trip, the three-day festival was surrounded by two weeks of adventures in both countries.
Heres how we did it:
GETTING THERE
Before going, we needed visas for both countries. With the advent of the Internet, this paperwork is just a few clicks away on your computer. The forms are downloadable and self-explanatory. The Cambodian visa must be paid in advance, but the government takes credit cards.
We also inoculated ourselves for hepatitis A and B, made sure our tetanus and flu shots were current, and got prescriptions for a strong all-purpose antibiotic. These didnt save our party from the array of health issues and injuries that beset almost everyone in our group at one or another point or another but along with our traveling medicine cabinets and over-the-counter meds from pharmacies in both countries, they helped keep us going each morning for the new days adventure.
We flew from Maui to Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines, then on Korean Airlines to Phnom Penh via Seoul, Korea. We checked our bags with Hawaiian at Kahului and didnt see them again until Phnom Penh.
The bad news is that the westbound flight takes 17 hours. The good news is that Korean Airlines has comfortable planes, generous baggage policies, constant entertainment and service in the cockpit and the serene vision of its efficient flight attendants, part angel, part geisha at 35,000 feet, whose glowing beauty lessens ones impatience to arrive.
Phnom Penh is an industrial city of some 3 million residents on the banks of four converging rivers including the Mekong. We stayed at the Foreign Correspondents Club.
With shabby chic yet sensual remnants of its French colonial past, it boasts a handful of boutique hotel rooms with balconies overlooking the river, and an open-air, high-ceilinged bar and restaurant on its top floor. Under its slowly turning ceiling fans surrounded by black-and-white war photos, you conjure ghosts of Graham Greene or Vietnam war-era journalists sitting at the next table.
The bar bustles at night. The next morning over breakfast you watch barges and fishing boats in the gray, gauzy early light. The riverside boulevard is coming to life with joggers, strollers and the occasional party of golden-robed monks. A trickle of motorbikes on the boulevard will soon grow into a never-ending swarm.
Tuk-tuks – open-air rickshaws pulled by motorbikes – will be our main form of transportation. You can hire one, hopefully with a friendly, helpful driver, for single trips or half days for under $10.
Cambodias center of commerce and government, Phnom Penh is home to an architecturally ornate Royal Palace full of Buddhist statues and art; and the National Museum tracing the artistic evolution of Buddhist and Hindu deities over centuries.
But its unavoidable tourist experience entails visits to the Killing Fields outside of the city and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in the city center. The museum had been a high school before the 1970s, when it was converted into cells of incarceration and torture under brutal dictator Pol Pot and his sadistic army, the Khmer Rouge.
Now its preserved cells are surrounded by walls covered with black-and-white portraits of those who died here, mostly teenagers.
At the Killing Fields, you take an auditory tour through a sylvan meadow where spirits of the dead have been displaced by dragon flies hovering around you. You learn of Pol Pot, the Cambodian intellectual educated in Paris where he was inspired by the Chinese Communist revolution of Mao Zedung.
Returning to his homeland and rising through the governmental ranks to emerge as Cambodias leader, his regime transformed illiterate young men from the countryside into the thug forces of the Khmer Rouge. The goal was agrarian socialism, driving residents from the cities and systematically killing the new people – the teachers, the literate, those who wore eyeglasses or had soft hands. Khmer Rouge victims across the country may have numbered as many as 3 million, countless women and children among them.
A tower at the center of whats now a Killing Fields memorial houses skulls, bones and scraps of clothing. The audiotape creates visions in your mind of trucks arriving in the night, discharging their terrified prisoners under bright lights, with martial music playing loudly over loudspeakers to cover their coming screams.
Why? you ask. How? And then you take off the earphones and try to leave the place behind.
HEADING NORTH
Leaving Phnom Penh, we took vans for the six-hour trip through the countryside to Siem Reap. Our driver seemed determined to never hit the brakes, creating his own lane when necessary as he passed motorbikes or farm tractors on the rarely traveled two-lane road.
We sped past lily ponds and skinny white cows grazing in fields on the flood plane. There were sporadic villages, a handful of houses on stilts, no glass in their windows, no doors in their doorways. There was no electricity, but near some houses were telephone poles with TV antennas on top. The TVs were powered by car batteries, we later learned.
At a remote fruit-stand rest stop, we were surrounded by kids selling baggies of fresh-cut pineapples. One girl, who looked far younger than her 17 years, took me for an easy sell and engaged me in conversation. Her English was surprisingly good, and she was curious about Hawaii when we said it was our home.
What I needed was tarantulas, she decided. Not their fried legs sold as a food delicacy, but the live ones, a bunch of big hairy spiders in the hat of a man sitting close by.
No way, I said. Are you scared? she asked. Absolutely, I told her. Nothing to worry about, she assured me, adding that their mandibles had been removed as she attached several of them to my shirt.
With its tree-lined boulevards and French colonial style, Siem Reap is far smaller and moves at a much saner pace than Phnom Penh. Its easily negotiated by tuk-tuk. And the five-star Sofitel resort, with it French-accented service, its postcard- worthy garden landscaping, its great breakfast buffet and its evening performances by ornately costumed, traditional court dancers with graceful hands and wondrous eyes, made their own contribution to the experience.
But the reason hearty travelers from all over the world find their way to Siem Reap is because of the world heritage site – the temples of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom – rising from 400 square kilometers of Cambodian jungle just a short tuk-tuk drive out of town.
With earliest construction dating back to the ninth century, the endless, ancient carved stone walls reflect both Hindu and Buddhist origins. Some hold epic battle scenes; others reveal the sensual female dancing spirits known as apsaras.
Surrounded by a moat that is itself a wonder of ancient hydrology, the superbly preserved temples hold centuries of history that could consume a lifetime of study. The towers of one temple are engraved with more than 200 massive smiling faces of Buddha looking in all directions.
Inner chambers may house stone Buddhas in golden cloaks, or other more sensual subjects. A natural action movie set (Angelina Jolies Tomb Raider was partially filmed here in 2001), history and mysteries intertwine in these ancient passageways that spiritually touch the soul, even as they send the imagination soaring.
Admission passes to the Angkor archaeological site are $20 for one day, $40 for three days or $60 for a week. One day is not enough, trust me. Its also highly recommended that you get a guide (around $30 for a day; arrangements can be made through your hotel). Our guide, Mr. Team Rany, added immeasurably to our experience with his knowledge, familiarity and passion for the site, connecting the dots in ways no guidebook can.
VIETNAM FLIGHT
From Siem Reap, we flew on Vietnam Airlines to our next destination, the Vietnamese hillside village of Da Lat. Over a lake with its French-inspired architecture and a bustling downtown, Asian and European influences meet amidst Da Lats cool climate and abundance of flower gardens.
We stayed at the Hoang Anh – Da Xanh Dalat Resort, whose marble floors and lodge ambience contributed to a hilltop-castle feeling. While tourist attractions tend included amusement parks and a gallery showcasing the citys signature embroidery, we spent one morning having breakfast with the monks before being escorted around the perfectly manicured grounds of the Truc Lam temple and Zen monastery on a hill above the city.
At Truc Lam, the focus of meditation is uncluttering the mind, freeing it from delusion. All of the ornate images of Buddha, you learn, are not symbols of a theist religion, but instead are like an anatomy chart in a chiropractors office, the role model for a fully realized human.
The more than 200 monks and nuns at Truc Lam begin their day at 3 am, spacing three two-hour meditation sessions through the day when theyre not attending to the chores of tending the grounds and gardens, housekeeping and feeding themselves. Six hours of meditation is not enough, we were told by monk Thich Tinh Dam, our host for the visit.
Nuns raking lawns removed their hats and broke into smiling bows as he passed. The minutes of the morning disappeared into a different sort of consciousness as he spoke – thoughtfully, articulately, poetically -making the timeless riddles of Zen practice understandable.
The enlightenment person knows nothing, yet illuminates everything, he explained.
From Da Lat, we again traveled by van cross-country, negotiating a foggy mountain pass before descending to sea level through verdant countryside. Occasionally we would pass remote villages, splashes of color against the leafy backgrounds, their inhabitants passing the afternoons on their front porches.
Our destination was Nha Trang, a seaside conglomeration of bustling metropolis and white-sand beaches. We stayed at the high-rise, beachfront Nha Trang Lodge Hotel where most of the other guests were none-too-friendly Russian tourists.
Attractions here included the quota of spectacular temples and statues of Buddha; the mud-bath Nha Trang Thap Ba resort with its assorted pools – hot, cool, mineral and swimming. Most memorable was the half-day excursion aboard a wooden, African Queen-style water cruiser, heading out into a glistening bay of the South China Sea surrounded by lush islands dotted with beaches.
A giant shark sculpture on a hillside guided us to a fairly funky aquarium. We snorkeled and swam in the warm waters, just offshore from rustic villages. Later we visited a floating fish farm where the biggest lobsters sold for 2 million dong (around $100).
FULL CIRCLE
Just as the trip had begun with the war echoes of Cambodias Killing Fields, our last day was spent in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. Bustling with a population of 10 million riding 7 million motorbikes, it too boasts abundant French colonial vestiges such as the replica of Notre Dame Cathedral in the center of the city.
While the Vietnamese were, for the most part, hospitable and welcoming to us, in Ho Chi Minh City it was impossible to forget the horrendous chapter the US had contributed to the countrys recent history.
In the citys Bao Tang Chung Tieh Chien Tranh War Remnants Museum, exhibits talley the tragic, senseless costs of that military engagement for all sides. Later that afternoon we motored into the countryside, visiting a factory where second and third-generation victims of Agent Orange created lacquer artwork.
Our final destination were the Cu Chi tunnels, now a tourist attraction on the historic site built over the intricate network of subterranean passages from which farmers-turned-Viet Cong fighters resisted the Americans as they had the French before them.
A visit to Cu Chi includes a Viet Cong propaganda film extolling the heroism of the Vietnamese patriots; a display of the crude booby traps used by the peasant resistance to snare enemy forces like animals; and, if you wanted to, the chance to actually descend into and crawl in the tunnels.
Nearby was a sport firing range, with a choice of weapons to shoot at stationery targets.
Climbing down into the claustrophobic hole in the ground, with the echoes of automatic weapons ricocheting in the tree canopy above the sweltering jungle path, for a brief moment I glimpsed the terrifying horrors encountered in this very spot by so many of my fellow Americans, earlier in this lifetime.
As Southeast Asia takes steps to rise from that past and reinvent itself as a lovely, exciting, spiritually enriching tourist destination, its hard to escape the sense that your life has been deeply and forever changed by the visit.
You have been uncomfortably reminded that atrocities unleashed in the name of war remain incomprehensible just as the reasons for those wars remain difficult, if not impossible, to recall. And that such acts continue today. You have been reminded that a tolerance for cruelty and oppression has been part of human history as long as that history has been written.
But you have also encountered the wondrous grandeur, mysteries and exhilaration of Angkor Wat, and the glimmering possibility of a more perfect existence at the Truc Lam monastery.
We encountered poverty on a scale unimaginable in our consumer culture. But, amazingly, it didnt seem to translate into the sorts of depression, dysfunctionality or the unhappiness so well known in our own society.
And we had grand adventures that boggled the mind, soothed the spirit, quieted the constant questions and thrilled the imagination. Our two weeks in these exotic distant lands connected us to branches of our human family we never knew existed, and left us feeling more alive than we have in years.
IF YOU GO
While this story isnt punctuated with Website addresses and hyperlinks, be assured that Googling any name or place mentioned in the text will yield contact points and troves of information.
We were fortunate that the trip was largely planned out for us by two fellow Mauians: Tom Vendetti, founding director of the Angkor Wat Film Festival, coordinated the Cambodian portion, while Bob Neal, working with Vina World Travel, did all the advance organizing, reservation booking and itinerary planning for Vietnam.
Traveling in a group of 14 provided the sense of safety and security of a tour in this very unfamiliar setting, but still left plenty of time for individual discoveries and adventures.
